What is the Women's Sports Foundation?

Also known as WSF, the Women's Sport Foundation is essentially a non-profit foundation dedicated to encourage and support the role of women in sports. It was founded in 1974 by Billie Jean King, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and her husband Larry King.

Billie won the award for “Outstanding Athlete of the Year” in 1974 and received the winning prize of $5000. She generously used this prize money to start the WSF. Billie also kick-started a magazine dedicated to women’s involvement in sports, which was named ‘Women’s Sports’ about the same time she founded WSF.

This foundation was also supported by other members, such as Olympic athletes, Donna de Varona and Suzy Chaffee.

WSF began operating with the mission statement: "To advance the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity." The WSF supports equals rights of women in the field of sports.

After heading the WSF successfully for over 15 years, Billie won a coveted award presented by Life Magazine in recognition of her efforts.

The foundation has an International Hall of Fame, which was started in the year 1980, to give special recognition to athletes who have made history in the world of women’s sports. They consider athletes who have worked in their sport for at least 25 years and who have dedicating their careers and efforts in the sports industry.
